Target Date Funds (TDFs): one year on

It’s been over a year since we launched the Savings Trust’s new default investment solution in June 2023, which over 80% of you save into.

As your TDF is made up of two brand-new investment funds, we’ve had to wait for a full 12 months to pass before being able to show the performance figures for the first year. However, we’re pleased to report that it’s been a positive start for the TDFs.

Your TDF vintage will be 100% invested in the growth-focused fund when you’re more than 15 years from your retirement date. But once you’re within 15 years of it, your retirement savings will slowly start to move from the growth-focused fund to the retirement-focused fund – or, in simple terms, from higher to lower-risk investments.

This chart shows how it works:

The Fund Factsheet in MyWorkplace shows you the exact split between these two funds. Just head to the ‘Funds and investments’ section of your account to find it.

This is the specific TDF your money is invested in. We’ve got lots of them, and each one is linked to a particular year of retirement. By doing this, the TDF makes sure your investment risk is set at an appropriate level.

As an example, if your retirement date is in 2040, your money will be invested in the Target Date Fund 2040.

TDFs are designed to let you hand control of the investment side of your retirement savings to the experts. All you need to do is keep your scheme retirement age updated when your retirement plans start to firm up. You can update your plans in MyWorkplace at any time, and Aviva will take care of updating your TDF vintage to match.

Target Date Funds: award-winning innovation

We’re delighted that our new default investment solution was recognised by the wider pensions industry by being awarded Best Pension Scheme Innovation at the 2024 Pensions Age Awards.

Unlike other TDFs, our solution offers a unique investment mix for every possible year of retirement. Other schemes have TDFs that span a five-year retirement period, which your Trustee Board felt didn’t allow the precise level of control that you’d expect.

Working with their partners, Mercer, Aviva and BlackRock, the Trustee Board designed and implemented the TDF solution that was successfully launched in June 2023.
